Notes: The Senate Commerce Committee held hearings this week on what could generally be described the corruption of America's youth by the entertainment industry. It could also be described in short as election-year demagoguery. Senator John McCain, who chairs the committee, left behind his likable irreverence in favor of senatorial sanctimony. Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison warned the entertainment executives that she was "sending a signal across their bow" leaving one to wonder if she meant to say "a shot across their bow." Both would-be first couples, Mr. and Mrs. Gore and Mr. and Mrs. Bush, decried La La Land's evil ways while affecting looks of concerned piety. It's hard to feel much sympathy for outrageously over-paid Hollywood types, but it would be even harder to have to watch a movie vetted the United States Congress. 09.29.00
