Notes: During the week, the New York Times reported that former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed -- who is now a senior consultant to the presidential campaign of George W. Bush -- was hired to lobby Bush by Microsoft. Reed's firm, Century Strategies, had begun to solicit letters favorable to Microsoft to Bush from powerful Bush supporters. Reportedly, Microsoft opponents are conducting their own lobbying campaign. The Bush camp became very upset on learning of Reed's dual role, and it was rumored that Bush adviser Karl Rove made a heated phone call to Reed. Reed apologized and promised not to lobby Bush on Microsoft's or anyone else's behalf. But, he was allowed to keep Microsoft as a client. Speculation was that Reed's strong links to the religious right gained this concession to him. 04.14.00
