Notes: America wants to destroy al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. Afghan tribal leaders are switching alliances away from the Taliban and al Qaeda and negotiating territories for their tribes. There is a confluence of the American and tribal goals for now as evidenced by the surprising rout of the Taliban during this past week where they lost control of 70% of Afghanistan. Pashtun tribes in the south have demanded that the Taliban cede control of some areas to tribal elders. However, by week's end the historic independence of the Afghans began to show with some leaders of the Northern Alliance saying that they did not want foreign peace-keeping troops in Afghanistan. Some friction between warlords seeking to control territory had appeared. The United States should achieve its goal of crushing al Qaeda and bin Laden, but then leave Afghanistan to Afghans. 11.18.01
